Exquisite decorated Marblehead Pottery Vase, dates early 1910. Superb example of the incised, highly stylized, "austere" Arts & Crafts designs where Marblehead used only two similar colors. In this case, a seaweed motif in matte green on a dark speckled blue background. This design was created by Maude Milner and executed by Sarah Tutt, as signed.
This decorated example is interesting because there are four separate "medallions" with the seaweed abstract design...
This particular vase is from the collection of Bruce Willis, and is lot #206 from the Bonhams Los Angeles sale in 2015. Mr. Willis was a well established collector of the finest decorated Marblehead. It's photographed with the auction catalog, and I'll include the catalog with the vase for provenance purposes.
Condition is FACTORY MINT, PERFECT. Not a scratch, repair, or any blemish. Obviously pampered over its 110+ years. As all pieces made prior to 1910, this vase has a red clay interior covered in a glossy clear glaze. The "M(ship)P" stamp is there as well as the "MT" for Milner and Tutt (collaboration.) Measures just under 3.75" in height and 4.25" in diameter at its widest.
Truly a subtle, gorgeous example of early American Arts & Crafts pottery at its finest. You will be impressed!
